The College Football Playoff Committee served up another set of rankings, and things are really getting tight. Each week matters and there are some critical conference races that carry more weight as we draw closer to the postseason. Check out the rankings below:
1. Ohio State
First two out:
Ohio State absolutely decimated a rebounding Wolverine team this weekend to finish the regular season 12-0. A rematch against Wisconsin in the Big Ten Championship awaits the Buckeyes who are playing for everything they have hoped for. First year coach Ryan Day looks like he’s a seasoned veteran of the coaching world. “The best thing about 12-0…”
LSU has arguably their biggest test to date as they find themselves in the SEC championship against Georgia. This will be a hostile crowd, as the game takes place in Georgia's back yard, but as long as LSU wins, they punch their ticket to the College Football Playoffs. This should be a close game, but Joe Burrow and friends should take care of business, even against an unfavorable crowd.
Hey there, Clemson. Congrats, you have one small test before the playoffs in the form of the Virginia Cavaliers. Get through your toughest opponent on the year, and you'll dance into the top 4 to defend your crown. Good luck, don’t screw it up!
Georgia is doing just enough to keep their playoff hopes alive, winning out and taking down cross state rival Georgia Tech to finish the season. Can Jake Fromm and Co take down the mighty machine that is the LSU Tigers? Saturday will be their final test. Pass, and you make the playoffs. Fail and you get relegated to a NY6 Bowl Game.
Here comes Utah! They are giving up no more than seven points to opponents as of late and ever since their upset of USC the Utes have really been cruising. Dismantling Colorado last weekend leaves one final speed bump in their way to playing in their first playoff, and first legitimate shot at winning at national championship. Beat Oregon and you just need to root against Baylor and Georgia, but you need Ohio State to win. Hoping for Clemson to lose doesn’t hurt either and then there’s not the whole argument of “Utah or OK/Baylor” for the 4th spot. All the eyes in the nation are on you on Friday night, Utes.
Oklahoma controls their own destiny as they sit at 11-1. They don’t have a high quality win unless you count Baylor. 28-3 will be ringing in the ears of both programs as they move forward in practice this week in preparing for the de facto Big 12 Championship. Don't expect Oklahoma to allow themselves to get in an early rut like the last time...or if they do, don’t expect Baylor to fall to pieces like before. This is a game the entire nation should be watching.
My updated playoffs based on end of season records (Including post conference championships):
1. Ohio State
Agree? Disagree? Let me know! It‘s gonna be an absolutely wild Championship weekend, and we can’t wait to see how it falls out. It’s gonna be fun!
